my story
Change of Direction
My story began with a change of direction.
When my son was young, I left my job to begin a new career in graphic and website design. I had always felt happiest when creating, so doing a job I love and being able to working from home made the change less daunting than expected and more like returning to the work I should have pursued all along.
Some of my earliest publishing projects began at the kitchen table. I created colouring books for my son, printed them on our home printer and soon found myself exploring self-publishing on Amazon. From there, I went on to publish non-fiction books across a wide range of subjects, including guidance for teenagers and young adults, positivity and manifestation, wooden birdhouses and rustic window boxes. I am now working on a recipe book for natural candles and, in a departure from instruction manuals and practical guides, a collection of short stories.
The more I learned about self-publishing non-fiction titles, the more I became aware of the difficulty many writers had the knowledge, experience and ideas to produce excellent non-fiction books, yet felt held back by the design process. Professional layout software often felt inaccessible, while basic templates rarely gave their work the finish it deserved.
Wilsonian Press grew from that observation. I began designing flexible Canva templates created specifically for independent non-fiction authors, giving them a professional starting point without taking creative control away from them. Since then, Wilsonian Press has developed beyond templates into a wider range of services for self-publishers who need practical support, thoughtful design and clear guidance.
There is plenty more taking shape behind the scenes. New resources, learning opportunities and services are already in development, all built around one aim, helping independent authors turn good ideas into books they feel proud to publish.
